Admissions
This Admissions Policy is Southampton City Council's Admissions Policy. It determines the admissions limit of 260 pupils for Cantell Secondary School. The governing body will not refuse admission unless the limit is exceeded by the number of applications received.
All on-time first preference applications will be considered together, shortly after the closing date. If the admission limit is exceeded by first preference applications, admissions will be considered against the following criteria in priority 1 to 2 until the admissions limit is reached.
- The Cantell Catchment Area, a map and list of all street names is available from the school and the Local Education Authority. Children who live outside the school's designated catchment area, in the following order:
- i) Where the child has a significant medical or psychological condition and whose application is supported by appropriate written evidence from a doctor or psychologist.
ii) Where a child has a brother or sister who will also be in Cantell at the time of admission.
iii) Children who live in a neighbouring single sex catchment area and who previously have specifically stated their preference for a co-educational school.
iv) Children who attend Cantell link Primary Schools (i.e. Bassett Green, Bevois Town, Highfield, Hollybrook, Mansbridge, Mount Pleasant, Portswood and Swaythling) and not otherwise included in the categories i)-iii) above.
v) Children who live closest to the school based on the shortest practicable walking distance. In-catchment children will be measured by the shortest practicable walking distance between home and school; out-catchment children from home to the designated catchment area boundary.
If the school is oversubscribed in criteria 1, criteria 2 (i) to (v) will be used to prioritise applications. If the school is oversubscribed in criteria 2 distance will be used to prioritise applications as in 2 (v).
Second and third preference applications will be dealt with in turn using the same priorities as set out above. If an applicant cannot be offered a place, parents/carers can request that their child's name is placed on a waiting list. The admissions policy will be used to prioritise applicants on the waiting list.
Pupils admitted to Cantell's Learning Support Unit are individually assessed by the Southampton Education Authority Assessment Panel and then considered for a place in the Unit.
