In September 2007 we launched our new Year 7 curriculum which will be designed to make the transition from junior school to secondary school a great deal more secure. Year 7 will be taught a competency based curriculum in mixed ability tutor groups.
The Year 7 learning experience is designed to….
- support students to develop as effective learners with good work habits and routines and thus raise standards of achievement overall;
- promote effective transition and ensure that students feel safe and secure in their new learning environment;
- fully engage students in their learning through stimulating and challenging thematic based projects;
- to foster positive and secure working relationships with staff through having one key teacher to whom they can relate;
- maintain and develop the effective working relationships with parents and families that have been created and nurtured by feeder schools.
Students in Year 7 will be working on a competency based curriculum using projects and extended themed tasks as the medium for acquiring and improving their skills in the competencies. The competencies are designed to provide learners with over-arching skills that will benefit them in their years of study to come. The competencies are also particularly relevant to employers as well as staff in further education establishments who seek motivated, independent and enquiring students.
In the first term students will be studying specific learning and thinking skills in order to fully understand the competencies and will work on a ‘Community and Environment’ project.
The competencies are as follows:
- Learning to Learn

- Reflecting and Improving
