A young environmentalist is making waves in Bali, Indonesia. Eleven-year-old Joseph Wijaya has launched a remarkable initiative. Joseph is recycling to address two pressing issues: plastic pollution and educational inequality.
Joseph's project involves collecting plastic waste from various sources, including restaurants, hotels, and households. With the help of his family and friends, the collected waste is sorted and sold to recycling facilities in Java. The revenue generated from this endeavor is then used to fund the education of underprivileged children in Bali.
"Even before I started this project, I would go to the orphanage, and my mom and dad would usually buy lots of food and stuff they needed and bring it there. And we would just play there for a bit," says Joseph.
According to Joseph, a year of schooling costs about $400 per child. He has paid for over 20 children, mostly from an orphanage he frequently visits. Joseph's passion for environmental conservation and social justice has inspired many. By providing educational opportunities to these children, he is not only improving their lives but also empowering them to become future leaders and change-makers.
Using a panini press, Joseph melts bottle caps of various colours and mixes them to get a marble design. He then cuts them into different shapes with a cookie cutter and attaches them to the links and split rings. Joseph's dedication to his cause has earned him recognition and admiration from around the world. His story serves as an inspiration to young people everywhere, demonstrating that even small actions can have a significant impact.
As Joseph continues to grow and his initiative expands, he hopes to inspire more people to join the fight against plastic pollution and work towards a more sustainable future!
